For trans people

Coming out

It’s the first — and often hardest step in transition.

Maintaining two separate identities — one as your gender assigned at birth, and one as the gender you identify — can be a huge strain on your mental health.

Take a look at our resources on coming out below:

Medical transition

Trans people seeking gender-affirming care here have two options for medical transition — public or private.

We talk about the specialists involved, the type of support you feel you may need, and how you can navigate transition-related healthcare.

Social transition

Social transition is the process by which trans people publicly affirm their gender identity.

This involves changing one’s names and pronouns.

One way to do so is to change your legal name.

We have guides on socially transitioning at school, at work and in life below:

Accessing psychological support

It can be challenging to navigate mental health challenges that arise at any stage of your transition.

Gender dysphoria and isolation may trigger or worsen mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety.

Support and communities

Our directory of communities you can join, and places you can find support.

Our sibling organisations

The T Project

The very first transgender organisation to be registered in Singapore, T Project runs a shelter for homeless transgender people and the Alicia Community Centre, which provides counselling for trans and gender-diverse people with trans therapists.

Transbefrienders

Transbefrienders runs a social support group for transgender youths and young adults seeking or considering transition.

Aside from the peer social group that meets up to discuss a variety of topics, you will be assigned to a Transbefriender.

For parents

I’ll Walk With You

I’ll Walk With You is a guide for parents of transgender children to answer frequently asked questions about what it means to be transgender and to transition.

You can take a look at this and other answers to queries parents and family members may have below:

My Family Matters

TransgenderSG, together with Oogachaga and SAFE, runs a support group for loved ones of LGBTQ+ persons, named My Family Matters.

We conduct a bimonthly gathering, which ranges from socials to panels on LGBTQ+ related topics.

SAFE Singapore

SAFE Singapore is the allyship organisation that aims to provide information, resources and support for family and friends of LGBTQ+ persons.

Proudly Parents

A social support group run by SAFE Singapore and TransgenderSG. This provides friendship and support to parents of trans, intersex and gender-diverse children.

Privacy is safeguarded and respected – new members usually meet for coffee with one of the organising parents.

They then join for the larger socials which happens quarterly, sometimes with guest speakers.

For allies

Tips on allyship

Freepik

What can you do as an ally? How can you be a better ally to trans people? Take a look at our comprehensive allyship guide:

For employers

We wrote the following trans-friendly workplace guidelines for leaders in management and human resources in Singapore to work into their HR policies.

While queer-friendly guidelines are available internationally, trans-specific recommendations are often missed out. Small and medium-sized companies can also adopt these guidelines, as it was designed with them in mind.

For healthcare providers and workers

Providing medical care to trans people goes beyond just gender-affirming care: it includes understanding how different medical conditions affect transgender bodies, and the languages you can use to affirm a person’s gender.

We talk more about how healthcare workers and providers can better treat trans people here.

For partners of trans people

Our guide for cisgender partners of trans people is aimed at helping them understand their trans loved one, what they should expect, how to cope and where they can seek support.
